Many horse racing punters have a soft spot for the Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival and the 2022 race looks set to be a cracker, with several young pretenders set to compete over two miles of flat track in a bid to announce themselves on the National Hunt stage.

Sir Gerhard is the betting favourite to win the Champion Bumper and it’s easy to see why punters have latched on to a horse with a promising future. Gordon Elliott’s six-year-old has been all the rage since winning a Flat race at Down Royal at the end of October and then went on to win a “Future Champions” Flat encounter at Navan.

Even so, it’s hard to get excited about a couple of victories along these lines and there will be plenty of other runners out to spring a surprise, with Kilcruit currently trading as the second favourite in the betting market and the Willie Mullins horse obliged at odds-on at Navan at the beginning of December.

The head of the Champion Bumper betting market is dominated by Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins horses and that includes Brandy Love who did everything right at Fairyhouse in December, although the same can be said of Chemical Energy and Hollow Games who run for the former trainer.

Chemical Energy won as the 10/11 favourite during a recent outing at Down Royal, beating On Eagles Wings who could also line up for this race. Meanwhile, Hollow Games was sent off as 1/2 favourite over Christmas and that prep run proved to be a fruitful one at Leopardstown.
